Eventbrite Now Available for All of WordPress.com

The WordPress.com Blog

We’re excited to announce big updates to our Eventbrite integration: your events can now be displayed right on your WordPress.com site, no matter what theme you use!

Enjoy Eventbrite, regardless of theme

In 2013, we launched two Eventbrite themes to help you promote your events. Since then, we’ve gotten requests from users to extend that functionality more broadly on WordPress.com. Today, we’ve rolled out our Eventbrite integration to all users, which means you are no longer limited to only using the Eventbrite themes to promote your events. You can now connect to Eventbrite from any theme to highlight your events. (The existing Eventbrite themes will still be available.)

Connect to Eventbrite using Publicize

Getting started is easy — your Eventbrite connection is located alongside your other Publicize accounts in Settings → Sharing. Once you connect to Eventbrite, your events will automatically display on a page of your choice, with links to detailed…

When Blondes Go Wrong

Longreads

After I found out about the Blonde Fury, I thought I’d better colour my hair again. I bought the dye at the same drugstore where I’d bought the pregnancy test, only this time its shelves were half vacant. There was an inventory girl with dark blueberry hair who stood in front of the selection with a clipboard. She had loaded all of the Blondissima and Super Blonde into a shopping cart, presumably to be trucked away into some back warehouse, out of customer eyesight. I reached out a finger and ran it along the remaining choices, as if touching the boxes would help me. When you get to know me, you’ll find out I have to touch everything to convince myself it’s real. I touch everything except people. Your father, an exception.

Brown Sugar, Toffee, Pecan, Cedar, Acorn, Walnut. In the cardboard panel on the boxes that showed the results…

didn’t my Lord deliver Daniel? (preaching to the choir)

Tales from the Great Adventure

DSC_0025 the choir at WFPC

This is one of those blog posts that is a response to a question. And, like most such posts, I’m probably giving a bigger answer than the question begs. But I’m an over-thinker; always have been; that’s just what writers do.

The question came out of a hymn. Or, more properly, a spiritual. Here’s the text (I’ll paste in the whole song at the end of this post):

Didn’t my Lord deliver Daniel?
Deliver Daniel, deliver Daniel?
Didn’t my Lord deliver Daniel?
But why not every man?

The question concerns the phrase “But/and why not every man?”

IMG_0455Obviously, this song emerged from the context of oppression and slavery; not just one individual’s experience, but a systematic oppression that was the living reality of an entire people. The idea that their God – the same God who kept Daniel safe in a den of lions, protected three men thrown into…

Vanity Fair’s New Cover Story: Caitlyn Jenner

Longreads

“As soon as the Vanity Fair cover comes out, I’m free.”

Vanity Fair has just released its cover image of Caitlyn Jenner—photographed by Annie Leibovitz, with a story by Buzz Bissinger.

The story is not yet available online, but Jenner tells Bissinger: “If I was lying on my deathbed and I had kept this secret and never ever did anything about it, I would be lying there saying, ‘You just blew your entire life.’ ”

Human Rights Activists Under Siege

Caracas Chronicles

Melanio Escobar is an honest man, a good father, and a stubborn human rights activist. We had a chat last year in the midst of the student protests, due to his viral coverage of the imprisonment of thousands of protesters. I was impressed by this well spoken ex-punk rocker and journalist with a name that would fit comfortably in the García Marquez Universe.

Early this week, Melanio accompanied human rights NGOs, Provea and Espacio Publico, to file a claim against the President of the Venezuelan legislature, Diosdado Cabello, for divulging private communications between these two NGOs during his TV show.

Yesterday afternoon, he tweeted a most disturbing thread:

Melanio reports that a man wearing dark clothes on a Black Kawasaki has been following his ex-wife and son since the day the claim was filed. He approached the relevant authorities to seek protection for his family, and made Diosdado Cabello responsible for anything that could happen…

A Verse of the Week

And he shall make an atonement for the holy place, because of the uncleanness of the children of Israel, and because of their transgressions in all their sins: and so shall he do for the tabernacle of the congregation, that remaineth among them in the midst of their uncleanness.
17And there shall be no man in the tabernacle of the congregation when he goeth in to make an atonement in the holy place, until he come out, and have made an atonement for himself, and for his household, and for all the congregation of Israel. (Bible: Leviticus 16 & 17
What do you think about uncleanness, transgression and atonement in our daily lives?
